Attack on Titan: Why Did Ymir Choose Mikasa?

With Attack on Titan finally coming to an end, fans are filled with a poignant feeling that they can’t let go of. One mystery that they still look at with bafflement is Ymir Fritz’s connection with Mikasa. Otakus wonders about the reason behind Ymir’s decision to choose Mikasa to save her from her misery.

Ymir’s tragic story is no secret to the fans who have been following this series. The good news that the finale brings the audience is that Ymir is finally free, and fans theorize that Mikasa has played a major role in her freedom. Upon close examination, the connection between them becomes quite evident. As it turns out, love consumed both of them.

Ymir’s profound love for King Fritz enslaved her to him for over two millennia. Despite being aware that the king was exploiting her and valued her only for her Titan powers, Ymir could not break free from his shackles. Mikasa’s narrative is similar to hers in the sense that she, too, was bound by a deep affection for Eren. While she never verbalized her feelings, they were quite evident – even to Eren. However, Eren remained ignorant of her feelings and used them instead to advance his grand plans. In fact, to fans’ frustration, he even went on to express how he hated her.

Ymir and Mikasa’s connection explained

Though Attack on Titan never explicitly states the connection between Ymir and Mikasa, both of their stories of unrequited love implicitly establish a connection between them. When Armin accessed Eren’s memories in the Paths Dimension, he gained insight into Ymir’s longing for freedom. However, her love for King Fritz sabotaged her yearning and she awaited someone to liberate her from this torment. In theory, fans believe that Eren’s Rumbling is aimed primarily at enabling Mikasa to help Ymir gain her deserved freedom.

However, one cannot help but argue, just as Armin did, that Eren played with Mikasa’s feelings. Her decision to kill Eren was not easy, but she prioritized humanity over her feelings for Eren. Her decision to kill Eren was an inspiration for Ymir, who had endured a similar situation. Ymir’s approving smile at the end conveyed her consent, and she chose to prioritize humanity over her loyalty to the king. Finally, she terminated the Titan powers once and for all, thereby freeing herself from the king and from her own misery.
