One Piece and its sequels have been reigning over the entire anime-verse ever since it began serialization back in 1997. While the manga hit the market in 1997, the anime TV adaptation started airing two years later in 1999. Amazingly, both the manga and the anime are running till now. It is set in a different world consisting of several other species than humans making Luffy’s ventures very isekai-ish.
One very interesting element of the series is its Devil Fruits. These are rare and unique fruits which are found worldwide. Those who eat them wield extraordinary powers. Distinct supernatural abilities, ranging from rubber-like stretching to causing earthquakes, are bestowed upon the Devil Fruit Eaters. One might think that if these Fruits give the consumers such powers, they could eat more than one Fruit. However, a very significant and intriguing aspect of these Fruits is the establishment of the inability to consume more than one Devil Fruit.
Devil Fruit: Everything you need to know
The idea of acquiring multiple powers by consuming multiple Devil Fruits is quite enchanting, but it is strictly prohibited. So much so, that it is a fundamental rule to not possess more than one Devil Fruit in the world of One Piece. If one does, it would result in an unexplained immediate death. This aspect maintains balance, adds mystery, and leads to adventures, thereby making it a significant nuance of the show.
Interestingly, Blackbeard possesses two Devil Fruit powers, and this ability has a lot to do with his character. He wields the Dark-Dark Fruit, which grants him control over darkness and helps him nullify other Devil Fruit abilities. He also has the Quake-Quake fruit, which enables him to induce earthquakes. This bizarre breaking of the One Piece rule is explained during the Marineford War arc when he captures Whitebeard and nullifies his powers. Therefore, he becomes one of the most formidable and remarkable antagonists in the series.
However, for everyone else, the rule remains the same, and Devil Fruits continues to be mysterious!
