In the previous episode of Hulu’s The First, Hagerty decided to cut Sadie from the crew over Fletcher despite Kayla’s recommendation. They also had potentially severe issues communicating with the MAV on Mars. The First season 1 episode 4 focused on the aftermath of Hagerty’s decision.
White Sheets
Sadie and her husband Ollie were trying to have a baby. But Sadie was secretly taking her birth control pill. She worked with Fletcher to get him up to speed with analyzing data since she wouldn’t be on Mars with them. He was having trouble and needed extra coaching. She remembered her early work in Antarctica when she was more hopeful.
Later, Sadie told Ollie that she had started taking her pill again, and he had known. She questioned why he didn’t say anything when she told him she had gotten her period. He had understood that she was processing something. While in bed with Ollie, she leaked onto the sheets and ruined them. She stopped at the store to get new sheets and watched a woman with her mother and two daughters happily drive away from the store, possibly reaffirming for her that she does want children.
Chain of Command
Laz questioned whether Hagerty had made the right decision. She called Kayla to her office to ask her again what she thought. Kayla declined to comment as it disrupted the chain of command. When Laz pressed further about her feelings over being replaced as mission commander, Kayla told her it felt that because she was black, they did not want her as the face of the program. Laz bristled at Kayla’s comment, but Kayla explained that it was how she felt, not what they had intended.
Kayla and Hagerty acknowledged they had never had a real conversation over how she felt about him replacing her. She ultimately admitted that she wanted respect from him.
Jar of Quarters
Hagerty had Ellen over while Denise was at work. He showed her the tattoo shop and Denise’s paintings. Ellen proposed that they could have a no-strings-attached relationship, as both of them had lost their spouses.
While they were asleep, Denise came home from work. She saw her father and Ellen in bed together. The next morning, Denise came down for an uncomfortable breakfast. She claimed that the painting in her studio was her mother, although it wasn’t. At the end of the episode, she started a new painting of her mother.
