After five weeks in release, James Bond returned to first place in North America with weekend ticket sales of $11 million for Skyfall. The Sony Pictures and MGM release currently has a domestic total to date of $261.6 million. Internationally, Skyfall grossed an estimated $20.3 million this weekend, bringing the film’s overseas total to $656.6 million. Skyfall has now taken in $918 million worldwide – the highest-grossing film ever released by Sony Pictures, beating Spider-Man 3‘s $890 million.
DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians climbed a spot to second place domestically with $10.5 million, for a total of $61.9 million after three weeks. Overseas, the movie added $26 million from 58 markets for an international total of $90.5 million. Worldwide, Rise of the Guardians has brought in $152.7 million so far.
Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 dropped two spots to third place its fourth weekend. The last installment in the franchise added $9.2 million to push its domestic total to $268.7 million. “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” became the highest-grossing movie in the franchise this weekend with a global gross of $751.1 million, surpassing the previous record of $712.2 million set by “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” last year.
DreamWorks Pictures’ Lincoln remained in fourth place with $9.1 million to take its five-week total to $97.3 million, while Twentieth Century Fox Film’s Life of Pi stayed in the fifth spot with $8.3 million and took its three-week total to $60.9 million. The Ang Lee film has also earned $105.7 million internationally for a worldwide total of $166.6 million.
The only new wide release this weekend was FilmDistrict’s Playing for Keeps, starring Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid. Debuting in 2,837 theaters, the romantic comedy earned $6 million in sixth place, an average of just $2,115 per theater.
Focus Features also released Roger Michell’s Hyde Park on Hudson, starring Bill Murray and Laura Linney, in just four theaters where it earned $83,300, or an average of $20,825 per site.
