Thanks in part to the success of their series Making A Murderer, Netflix will continue to capitalize on the popularity of true-crime with the announcement of The Story of a Crime. The new anthology series about controversial crimes that have shaken different countries for decades and that generated social confusion, accusations of corruption and the search for justice.
“We are thrilled to explore new formats, invest in international talent and partner with the best storytellers from around the world to create content that travels and resonates globally,” said Erik Barmack, vice president of International Originals at Netflix. “Crime is a very popular genre around the world, and we are very excited to bring this new anthology series proposal, with an international touch, to Netflix members everywhere.”
The first season of the franchise will feature the case of Luis Donaldo Colosio, the politician and Mexican presidential candidate who was killed in a campaign event in Tijuana in 1994. The 8-episode season will begin production this week in Mexico City and will be available exclusively to Netflix members worldwide in 2019.
The series is produced by Dynamo for Netflix and starring Jorge A. Jiménez (Machete Kills), Ilse Salas (Cantinflas), Alberto Guerra (The Lord of the Skies), Gustavo Sánchez Parra (Amores Perros), Martín Altomaro (Rudo y Cursi), Lisa Owen (The Unusual Catfish) and Ari Brickman (Sense8), among others. With Rodrigo Santos as the main scriptwriter, Historia de un Crimen: Colosio will be produced by Andrés Calderón and Juan Uruchurtu, and directed by Hiromi Kamata and Natalia Beristáin.
