What may become a growing trend for source material being turned into studio movies is the documentary genre that’s exploded in recent years. Last year, Andrea Blaugrand Nevins’ documentary The Other F Word, a look at punk rockers who were now trying to deal with fatherhood while touring, was released by Oscilloscope Pictures. While it didn’t get as much attention as other docs,Deadline is now reporting that Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Five-Year Engagement star Jason Segel has taken the doc’s central premise and sold a pitch for a comedy he co-wrote with Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) to Fox with plans to star in said movie.
The original movie featured Mark Hoppus from Blink-182, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Art Alexakis from Everclear and others, and while we have no idea how they will be transforming the doc into a comedy, one can probably safely assume that Segel will be playing an aging rocker trying to deal with fatherhood, similar to what his character Marshall has been dealing with on the hit CBS show “How I Met Your Mother.”
Segel and Pearce will be executive producers on the project, along with the original doc’s director and producer, and according to the story, Fox picked up the rights to make the movie in a bidding war with other studios.
Besides writing the upcoming Iron Man 3, Pearce is also involved with the upcoming remake of Godzilla and developing a screenplay for Sherlock Holmes 3.
