New Movies on Blu-ray/DVD

Pacific Rim: Uprising

John Boyega plays the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost in this wild sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 kaiju monster mash. Although it may be completely silly, the fights between the giant robots and giant monsters are still just as earth shattering as they were in the first one, with more in broad daylight and with a youthful vitality that takes its cues from Tony Scott’s Top Gun. Unsane

Oscar winning director Steven Soderbergh shot this psychological thriller entirely on an iPhone 7 Plus. The story of a woman who may or may not be imagining her stalker stars Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins and Amy Irving.

The Death of Stalin

This outrageous satire from Armando Iannucci (In the Loop, Veep) stars Steve Buscemi, Simon Russell Beale, Paddy Considine, Rupert Friend, Jason Isaacs, Michael Palin, Andrea Riseborough and Jeffrey Tambor. The DVD release presents a comic look at the troubles that sprang from the death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1953.

Furious

This Russian historical fantasy film tells the 300-esque story of a legendary battle, where seventeen fearless warriors defend their land against an army of thousands well-trained soldiers.

Alex & Me

When 14 year old Reagan fails to make the local soccer club and is humiliated by her rival, soccer star Alex Morgan comes into her life and trains her to be the best she can be. The only caveat? Reagan is the only one who can see Alex.

Reissues

The Woman in the Window

Edward G. Robinson and Joan Bennett star in this 1944 noir film from director Fritz Lang about a psychology professor who kills the lover of a woman he’s infatuated with, and the two conspire to cover up the murder. The Blu-ray has an audio commentary by film historian Imogen Sara Smith.

Under Capricorn

Set in colonial Sydney, Australia during the early 19th century, this underrated Alfred Hitchcock thriller stars Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotten, and was filmed in a series of long 10-minute takes.

Night of the Lepus

Scream Factory issues this insane 1972 horror film about giant mutated rabbits that ravage a rural area over several days. The film features Dr. McCoy himself, DeForest Kelley in a typically gruff performance, as well as some oh-so-noticable miniatures in order to make the pre-CGI rabbits look large.
