Michelle Williams Joins Julianne Moore in After the Wedding Remake

Variety reports that Oscar nominee Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea, Blue Valentine) will be starring opposite Academy Award winner Julianne Moore (Still Alice) in the remake of Susanne Bier’s Academy-Award nominated Danish drama After the Wedding. The original film was nominated for the best Foreign Language Oscar in 2007 and stars Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) and Sidse Babett Knudsen (Westworld).

The After the Wedding remake follows the director of an Indian orphanage on the verge of bankruptcy, who discovers that her organization is in contention to receive a large charitable donation from a wealthy American businesswoman, forcing her to travel to New York City where she is confronted by a past she tried to forget.

Moore is set to play the rich businesswoman who quickly proves that she is not one to be reckoned with. Williams, who recently received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in All the Money in the World as well as starring in the box office smash The Greatest Showman alongside Hugh Jackman, will portray the orphanage owner in the film.

Writer and director Bart Freundlich (WolvesThe Rebound) has reimagined the film with the two lead roles as women in order to create a story of motherhood and family. After the Wedding will take place in and around New York.

The film will be produced by Joel Michaels (Terminator Salvation) and Silvio Muraglia (Black Butterfly) through Paradox Studios, which is also financing the project.

Production on After the Wedding will begin this spring.
