The Hollywood Reporter brings word that this summer’s sleeper hit, 47 Meters Down, is gearing up for a sequel. Director Johannes Roberts will return to write and direct the film, which will will add one more meter and be titled 48 Meters Down.
The first film stars Mandy Moore and Claire Holt as vacationing sisters in Mexico that encounter sharks in the water. For the sequel, the events of the film will shift from Mexico to Brazil, and follow “a group of girls looking for adventure in the coastal metropolis of Recife. Hoping to get off the well-worn tourist trail, they hear about some hidden underwater ruins only to find that the turquoise waves of their secret Atlantis aren’t completely uninhabited.”
“We are so pleased by the huge success of 47 Meters Down, it totally exceeded all expectations,’ said producer James Harris of The Fyzz Facility. “48 Meters Down will take the claustrophobia of cave diving and the thrill of shark encounters and move everything to the next level.”
47 Meters Down previously sat on the shelf with Dimension films but finally found distribution from Entertainment Studios, which debuted the film theatrically in June of this year. The film went on to gross over $44 million at the domestic box office on a budget of just $5 million.
