Whether you love or hate his films, there’s no denying that director Joel Schumacher has shown himself to have tremendous staying power in Hollywood from directing ’80s classics like St. Elmo’s Fire and The Lost Boys to discovering talent like Kiefer Sutherland and Colin Farrell, having the unenviable task of following Tim Burton onto a huge studio franchise (and the less said on that the better), and doing smaller and more personal films in recent years.
Now he’s back with Trespass, a home invasion thriller that reunites him with Nicole Kidman (Batman Forever) and Nicolas Cage (8MM), playing a wealthy couple whose luxurious home is invaded by a group of violent criminals led by Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom) and Cam Gigandet (Twilight). It doesn’t exactly redefine the home invasion genre as much as show that Schumacher can still direct the type of movies they make in Hollywood with big-name stars, only in this case, the film was done independently with producers Irwin Winkler and Avi Lerner.
ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk with Schumacher last week about the movie and a variety of other topics including his musings on how Hollywood has changed since he began in the late ’70s.
