J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot to produce dramedy based on the life of RuPaul
J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is working with World of Wonder (RuPaul’s Drag Race) to produce a dramedy about the life of club kid and drag queen-turned-fashion icon RuPaul, according to Deadline. The half-hour dramedy series will be a fictionalized version of his real-life story. The show will reportedly be set in New York City, during the Regan era 1980s. The show will be written by Power executive producer Gary Lennon and Warner Bros. will produce. According to the site, the show will be shopped around in the near future. RuPaul will executive produce.
RuPaul, who’s full name is RuPaul Andre Charles is the host of the popular RuPaul’s Drag Race, which was on Logo TV, and is moving to VH1 this year. The show is about to begin its ninth season, and RuPaul won an Emmy Award for best reality series host for his work. RuPaul became a popular figure in the nightclub scene in New York City during the time the show is set, and became famous for the song “Supermodel (You Better Work),” as well as a duet with Elton John on the song, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” RuPaul became the spokesperson for MAC Cosmetics, and became the first drag queen supermodel. He has had quite a number of acting roles, playing both men and women, and has published two books: “Lettin’ It All Hang Out” (1995) and “Workin’ It “(2010).
Bad Robot is currently producing the HBO drama series Westworld and the upcoming series Castle Rock, based on the works of Stephen King. Are you guys excited about the RuPaul dramedy?
