Sony Pictures has plans for a big-screen remake of the 1976 musical drama Sparkle, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter. Jordin Sparks and Mike Epps are already attached to star and Whitney Houston is said to be in negotiations.
Salim Akil, who recently made his feature film debut with Jumping the Broom, is attached to direct with his wife and creative partner Mara Brock Akil providing the screenplay.
Inspired by the true story of The Supremes, the original film told the story of a Harlem singing choir and the rough road to fame. Sparks will headline as the lead, Sparkle Williams with Epps playing a stand-up comedian that marries one of her sisters. If she signs on, Houston will play Effie, the mother of Sparkle.
