“Bewitched” looks to be making a return to television. Variety reports that CBS is interested in developing a new series and has hired Marc Lawrence (Did You Hear About the Morgans?, Miss Congeniality) to draft a pilot.
The original series, which ran for eight seasons beginning in 1964, told the story of a married couple; Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery), a witch and Darrin (first Dick York and later Dick Sargent), a mortal. The show spawned a short-lived spinoff, “Tabitha” and a made-for-TV animated film “Tabitha and Adam and the Clown Family,” both centering on Samantha and Darrin’s magical daughter.
In 2005, Columbia Pictures released a feature film version, starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. Attemping a post-modern take on the material, Kidman played an actual witch who is cast on a remake of the original series (with Ferrell an actor cast as Darrin). The film underperformed at the box office, earning only $63 million domestically.
Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick, who produced the feature version, will return to executive produce the new project through Sony Pictures Televion.
