Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro on Pacific Rim and More

ComingSoon.net sister site ShockTillYouDrop.com just spoke with Guillermo del Toro about Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, opening in theaters on August 26. The full interview will be up soon, but here’s what he had to say about his next directing project, Pacific Rim.

“This is my most un-modest film,” said del Toro, emphasizing the tremendous scale, “this has everything. The scale is enormous and I’m just a big kid having fun.”

As far as the monsters in the film go, “huge” is the word that del Toro is using. The plot of the film involves attacking Kaiju-esque beasts that are defended against by mankind’s enormous mech suits.

He also touched on last week’s news item in which Mike Mignola told a reporter that del Toro likely won’t return for Hellboy 3.

Del Toro says that he WOULD like to do a third film, but his schedule is so nuts.

“By the time I get to it and by the time we got Ron [Perlman] back, he’ll be a HellMAN and in a wheelchair,” he joked.

Another long-pending project is del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein which he says is still on the horizon despite a number of similarly-themed upcoming projects being in the works.

“My take is so unique,” he said, “it will set it apart,”

In his immediate future, though, del Toro will be returning to Toronto shortly after finishing press for “Dark” to continue pre-production on Pacific Rim
