Happy Valentine’s Day! At least three titles here are particularly (in)appropriate. Enjoy!

Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead — I hated hard on Dead Snow, a film I found overly referential and far too goofy. Writer-director Tommy Wirkola has undoubtedly progressed since his debut however. Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead is beautifully lensed, treating this over-the-top sequel like a war movie. This lack of winking—except when goofing on real-life zombie apocalypse preppers, which is warranted—makes it that much more fun. The splatstick is top notch, and the film’s insane, Bonnie Tyler-scored epilogue makes it perfect for Valentine’s viewing.

Honeymoon — A terrific, strong debut from writer-director Leigh Janiak, Honeymoon cuts to the fear of new marriage: the anxieties of inadequacy and the doubt that you might not know this life partner as well as you hoped. Janiak and cinematographer Kyle Lutz surround and contrast this paranoia with a fuzzy, idyllic cabin setting. Like marriage, you’re meant to ask, How could something meant to be so beautiful go so wrong?

Summer of Blood —Onur Tukel’s blend of self-deprecation and vampire film makes for a particularly funny horror-comedy in which a self-involved, and decidedly unself-aware schlub is given the gift of immortality and introspection. Deadpan, bloody and really funny.

Also: Not horror, but Texas neo-noir Bad Turn Worse has been added, and fans of Jim Thompson and tight crime yarns will find a lot to love about it. Highly recommended.
