Similar to the recaps for Hannibal, I’ve teamed up once again with the “What the Flick?!” team – William Bibbiani, Alonso Duralde and Ben Mankiewicz – for video discussions of each episode of The Strain. Look for these recaps each Monday after the show airs on Sunday night.
Let’s begin with The Strain‘s premiere episode, shall we? Entitled “Night Zero,” this installment brought a mysterious threat to New York City and introduced us to Corey Stoll’s Ephraim Goodweather and his team. Bibbs and I go a little easier on the series debut than Duralde and Mankiewicz do. Is this episode clunky? Sure it is, but there’s plenty to like about it, too, especially if you’re looking for some good ol’ creature feature fun.
The Strain tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.
Guillermo del Toro helmed the pilot; the series is based on the book series he penned with Chuck Hogan.
