The Conjuring Scares Up $3.3 Million in Thursday Previews

That number is on par with what Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim made in preview screenings last week and just a little bit less than what Brad Pitt’s World War Z did in its own previews–that one brought in $3.6 million on its way to a $66 million opening weekend. That’s also slightly less than the last straight horror movie, James DeMonaco’s The Purge, which brought in $3.4 million in Thursday previews on its way to just $34 million in its first full three days.

More analysis after the jump.

Pacific Rim opened last weekend with the slighly higher $37.2 million and The Conjuring looks to be somewhere in that same range of that and The Purge unless it picks up a lot of word-of-mouth business on Friday, which is definitely possible based on the great reviews the movie has garnered from early promo screenings. Check back on Sunday for the full box office report and to see whether James Wan’s latest movie beat out the competition of Turbo, RED 2 and the zombie comedy R.I.P.D.
