Murphy, always open to chat about new projects, revealed that he begins working with his writing staff on Monday on the third season of American Horror Story. In addition to confirming that Jessica Lange, Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson will return in the next story arc, he told the press that actors from season one (who did not come back for season two) are going to have a place in season three.
But that’s not all…
Murphy told Shock director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (who helmed many of the best Asylum episodes), “has a really great eye and we work really well together. We just did a deal for him to be a producer/director next season where he is probably going to direct every third [episode] but definitely work with the directors to work on the visual style of the show.”
“I’m done with aliens,” Murphy laughed when asked about season three. “The thing I wanted to do next season was something that’s funnier. I really missed that ‘Jessica Lange as Constance’…that stuff and I know she missed it, too. [Next season] is a mixture of several cities and it’s really about female power. And I got Jessica to do it because I did everything she asked, which was the location. I also told her she’ll have complete hair and make-up and the best designer gowns ever. She’s going to play a really glamor cat sort of lady. I’m just now meeting with a lot of actors that Jessica wants to work with. She loves doing the show and I think she love the thirteen-episode nature of it so she can do other things.”
Story-wise, Murphy said, “I always start off with things I have always been obsessed with and the season we’re about to do is another thing – like the Asylum – I’ve always liked as a kid. I come up with the story and it’s always now crafted around Jessica. So, I tell her what the story is and what the character is. Her input, like this year, is I’d like to work with X, Y and Z, can you meet with these people? So I’m doing that.”
He added that he knows who Sarah Paulson’s character for next season will be already, however, Paulson does not. When asked if season three will feature an “icon” like the Rubber Man or Bloody Face, Murphy said “yes” and that it will be a female “icon” this time.
As for the finale of Asylum, I thought it was pretty stellar. A classy, creative and well thought out way to wrap up this insane story arc which, I admit, stumbled along the way but found its footing in the final few episodes.
