Mini-Review:
If you liked the first two “Family Guy” parodies then you’ll probably like this one, too. And if you hated the first two, you’ll hate this one as well. It’s essentially more of the same with all the same strengths and weaknesses. The creators didn’t learn much from making the first two.
I had the same problem with “Family Guy: It’s A Trap!” as I did with its predecessors. Too much of this cartoon is simply copying “Return of the Jedi” scene for scene, just with the “Family Guy” characters put in. To illustrate my point, they literally trace over the original scenes of ships flying by. They use the same dialogue. They even populate the background with “Family Guy” versions of the aliens, Rebels, and Imperials, not parodies of them. It comes across as less parody and more the animators playing out their fantasies of making a “Star Wars” cartoon. You put this up against the “Robot Chicken” Star Wars episodes and you see what I mean. The “Robot Chicken” episodes are a lot more fun because they poke fun at the saga or expand on it rather than simply rehash the story.
All that being said, there are a few jokes that made me, as a major “Star Wars” fan, laugh. When “Family Guy” points out funny plot points or oddities in the story it is at its best. For example, when Wicket threatens Princess Leia upon meeting her, he immediately sells out his planet and race for a cookie. Then there’s the scene where Luke is standing over the Rancor pit and C-3PO repeatedly tries to warn him, yet he’s utterly dismissed by Luke over and over. That made a pretty funny joke. There are even some funny jokes about Seth McFarlane and Seth Green which cracked me up.
The show has some pretty great guest voices. Carrie Fisher plays Mon Mothma. Patrick Stewart and Michael Dorn also reprise their roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lieutenant Worf for a passing joke. Also listen for cameos by Rush Limbaugh, Anne Hathaway and Arianna Huffington.
Despite the humorous “Star Wars” cover and the fact that this is not rated, it’s not at all appropriate for kids. There are a few f-bombs and other profanities as well as a few pedophilia and rape jokes. Anyone that lets their kids view this should be investigated by Children’s Protective Services.
There are a few bonus features included on this DVD. You’ll find a brief skit where Darth Stewie leaves a long rambling message on Luke’s answering machine. You’ll also get featurettes on how to draw the characters, the animatics, and the “making of a scene.” But the highlight is “Star Wars Trivial Pursuit: The Ultimate Championship.” We see a few of the creators from the show play a game of Trivial Pursuit. It is pretty funny when you see that “Star Wars Geek Pride” is on the line. Rounding out the bonus features is a commentary and outtakes from the ‘special edition’ sock puppet.
