Indie Watch: Cougars Teaser Goes on the Prowl

It’s exactly what you think it is

Ningen Manga Productions has whipped up a teaser for Cougars, a new project hitting the film fest circuit this fall. Full press release and teaser below.

Since COUGARS is a horror movie, it’s not a spoiler alert to say some of the characters go through some literal transformation before all is said and done. NMP teamed up with Spaghetti Industries FX artists Christain Quarantillo & Scott Simpson (Laid to Rest 1&2, Deadlands 1&2, the upcoming Area 51) to bring that transformation to life.

Says Quarantillo, “Not many people are making monster movies anymore, so it was great to sink our teeth into something different. I’m really pleased with how the effects turned out.”

Adds Producer Cindy Marie Martin, “We’ve known the Spaghetti ‘dudes’ for a long time, but hadn’t had the opportunity to work with them for years. It was just perfect timing where everything fell into place.”

Writer/Director Lonnie Martin explains that at around fifteen minutes, COUGARS is “dipping a toe in the water” to see what kind of interest there might be for a feature or TV pilot. Taking a cue from both Val Lewton’s original Cat People and Paul Schrader’s 1982 remake, he thinks the idea is ripe for reinvention. Martin explains, “With the whole ‘Cougar’ phenomenon permeating the culture over the past few years, I was pretty surprised that nobody had yet done a supernatural take on it. Aaron Ryder is supposedly working on a Cat People remake for Universal and I’ve heard Hammer has one in development too. However, so far I think we’re the first to pull the trigger on a 21st century ‘werecat’ movie.”

Ningen Manga Productions, LLC’s first feature, Women’s Studies, was released last year by R-Squared Films. It’s about a woman and her friends who become trapped at a women’s academy run by homicidal feminists, and is available through Amazon on both DVD and Instant Watch.
