Michael C. Hall On Dexter Finale and Beyond

Talks future of Showtime hit series

It’s been a full week and we’re still reeling over the season finale of Dexter. Both Michael C. Hall and producer Clyde Phillips conducted interviews with Entertainment Weekly pertaining to the shocking last few moments of Season Four of the Showtime hit series.

Below are a few select quotes from both chats. Beware if you have not seen this season (or the episode) yet, the following is very SPOILER HEAVY.

Michael C. Hall’s thoughts on that final scene? “I thought it was brilliant,” he says. “I was really proud of the writers, and the network, for not backing away from so bold a step. It really propels us forward in a way that we wouldnâ??t have enjoyed otherwise. And what it could mean for the character is really wide open.”

Pertaining to the potential direction for next season, Hall explains, “Had this season not ended the way it ended, thereâ??s almost a sense that Dexter is entertaining the thought that maybe heâ??s going to get this out of his system. That if he kills Trinity, whoâ??s left to kill? I think heâ??s entertaining the notion that maybe heâ??s done. [But] with this season ending the way it ends â?? and Dexter experiencing this appetite for vengeance that he canâ??t satiate â?? all bets are off on that front.”

Clyde Phillips talks about why they chose to kill off a major character for this season finale. “We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity. Itâ??s a little bit of a corner that we paint ourselves into. Last year we tried to avoid that and actually I think we didnâ??t do as well as we could have. We killed off Jimmy Smitsâ?? character [in the 11th episode] of 12 episodes and then we had to figure out what we were going to do in the 12th episode. This season, we knew that we were going to take Trinity out in the 12th episode and we think that the audience knew that, too. We had to raise the bar to as high as possible and then figure out what to do next year.”

When asked how many more season’s we can expect of Dexter, Hall replied, “Weâ??re definitely going to do one more â?? beyond that, I donâ??t know. This show is as popular as itâ??s ever been and Iâ??m sure thereâ??s a desire on the networkâ??s part to keep that ball rolling, but I take these things one episode at a timeâ?¦. This thing canâ??t go on indefinitely, and yet itâ??s gone on in ways that I never could have imagined, so I would like to believe that it can continue.”
