Tribeca ’09: Josh Lucas, Michael Cuesta Talk Tell-Tale

Starring and directing a modern twist on Edgar Allan Poe

One of the high profile thrillers which received its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this past weekend is Tell Tale, the third movie from Michael Cuesta (L.I.E.).

Loosely based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story “The Tell-Tale Heart,” this psychological thriller stars Josh Lucas as single father Terry Barnard, who after undergoing a successful heart transplant starts to see and feel strange things that might be related to the original donor, who died in a horrible death. Working with a police detective played by Brian Cox, Terry starts to track down those who might know what happened to the donor, but the people he questions tend to come to a violent end as Terry’s new heart starts to take control of his actions.

The film’s tone is not unlike M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable or The Eye in terms of it being treated as much like a crime-mystery as it is a thriller, though there are more than a few moments not for the squeamish.

For those familiar with Cuesta’s previous movies, both indie character dramas, Tell Tale might seem like a drastic departure, but it makes a lot more sense when you realize that Cuesta is also the original co-executive producer and pilot director for Showtime’s “Dexter.”

Last week, ComingSoon.net/ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to sit down with Cuesta and Lucas to talk about the movie.

Tell Tale plays one more time at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, May 1; you can find more details at the Official Guide.
