Writer Talks Red Riding Trilogy

The hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper

A trilogy is in the works that’s beginning to sound like the UK equivalent to David Fincher’s Zodiac. It’s called the “The Red Riding Trilogy” and stems from a series of novels, about the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper, by David Peace. The films – 1974, 1980 and 1983 – are all written by Tony Grisoni (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) yet feature different directors behind the camera (Julian Jarrold, James Marsh and Anand Tucker).

Shooting has commenced on the first entry and Screen Rant was invited to chat with Grisoni about this endeavor. He delves into various subjects such as the focus of each film and talks a bit about some of the characters leading them. Here’s a sample: “The thing about David’s fiction and these films we made is that they are quite complex pieces. There isn’t a good and bad. It is more like what it is like out there. It’s all these different levels of good and bad, it’s not like they are not comic book heroes. They are fractured people.”

Do yourself a favor and check out the rest of this interview which goes into much further detail. (There’s too much info to tease here.)

The series is being produced for the UK’s Channel 4.
