Pride and Prejudice…and Zombies

A word about the book and possible film

Seth Grahame-Smith, author of “How to Survive a Horror Movie,” has done something warped – and possibly brilliant. He has taken Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice” and added “all-new scenes of flesh-eating zombie action.”

No joke.

As the story opens in the quiet English village of Meryton, a mysterious plague is bringing the dead back to life. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. The delightful comedy-with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers-becomes all the more absurd and entertaining as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of stumbling, flesh-eating undead.

Roughly 85% of Austen’s original novel, which is in public domain allowing Grahame-Smith to get away with this feat, remains in “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” And we can confirm, Hollywood is watching the buzz on this experiment. We’ve spoken to two producers, one who contacted me to get in touch with Grahame-Smith, who are interested in the property.

Of course, we hope for nothing but the best should Grahame-Smith’s take on this tale get optioned. The book streets in April from Quirk Books and will sell for $12.95.
