The Dead at Sea

Zombies on a cruise ship!

Some concepts circulating in the ether are insistent, demanding to be explored. One of them seems to be “zombies at sea.”

A few years ago, a script was optioned with a story about the undead aboard a luxury liner. A couple on the verge of marital implosion are literally separated in different parts of the ship during an outbreak and the narrative was fragmented into two perspectives: His story. Her story. It was a good read. Ended with some strong images like a horde of fiery zombies piling over the side of the ship. I wish it happened. Oh, well…

Image Comics is bringing us Dead Ahead this September which takes a similar conceit but wraps it up in a different story. Here, writers Mel Smith and Clark Castillo tell of fishermen adrift at sea with nowhere to turn because a plague has hit dry land bringing the dead back to life. They run across a cruise ship and zombie madness begins.

Alex Niño is providing the art for this three-part series which is due in late-September. A collected edition is expected in December with an additional 16 pages and other goodies.
