Wim Wenders Swimming in Miso Soup

Eclectic director takes on horror

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wim Wenders (The American Friend, Wings of Desire) owned up to the fact the he’s leaning into the horror genre for his next endeavor.

“It is going to be very exciting,” he tells the trade paper. “Horror is one genre that is used much less than others to transport other things. Lots of people have used great thrillers to transport political messages but the horror film is rarely used to transport anything but fear. And that I think makes it very interesting to try. It’s called Miso Soup and is based on a famous Japanese novel. Willem Dafoe is attached to star. We will shoot in Tokyo next spring. But I’m not telling you anything else.”

The book he speaks of is In the Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami which tells of a Japanese tour guide on a trip with an abominable American maniac who may or may not be killing people. The book’s jacket synopsis called the story “a wicked meditation on the worst traits of American and Japanese society.”
