With James Wan’s terrific The Conjuring 2 heading to cinemas this week, we thought we’d take the opportunity to round up what we consider to be the 10 best horror movies of all-time, which you can scare yourself with by checking them out in the gallery below! What do you think are the best horror movies of all-time? Let us know in the comments below!
In this instance, “best” is a good substitute word for “most essential,” in the sense that the ten movies on here are all films any self-proclaimed horror fan should absolutely see before they die (or make up their own list). These are films that have shaped a century of terror in cinemas, and proved highly influential to other filmmakers in the genre.
To prove how inherently subjective it is, the author wishes to note that you will find neither hide nor hair of a film that often makes the #1 slot in lists like this. Why isn’t The Exorcist on here? The author is not a believer in The Devil or possession. At all. So while The Exorcist is objectively great filmmaking, there are others that touch the writer on a more visceral level. There you go. Hopefully this list of best horror movies will either encourage you to seek out some of these films or think of others that belong on here as well.
And, as an added bonus for those new to the genre, here’s a few more essentials that didn’t make the cut which you should definitely seek out: Faust, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Horror of Dracula, Black Sunday, Psycho, Peeping Tom, Carnival of Souls, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Carrie, Dawn of the Dead, Halloween, Alien, Phantasm, The Fog, Friday the 13th, The Howling, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Fly, The Hitcher, Evil Dead 2, Misery, The Silence of the Lambs, Dead Alive, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Candyman, Funny Games, The Devil’s Backbone, Hard Candy, The Orphanage, The Mist, Only Lovers Left Alive, The Babadook, It Follows.
