It was a deathly slow weekend at the box office showing the lowest cumulative gross for the Top 10 this year. After settling for second place in a heated battle for the top spot last weekend, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon indeed reclaimed #1 for the first time since it opened a month ago, with an estimated $15 million and bringing its total to $178 million after five weeks in theaters. Internationally, “Dragon” took third place with $11 million. The film has earned $194 million overseas and $372 million worldwide.
Opening in second place was Jennifer Lopez’s latest romantic comedy vehicle The Back-up Plan (CBS Films) with $12.2 million in 3,280 theaters. It had a better showing for the fledgling distributor than their previous offering, the drama Extraordinary Measures, but it wasn’t great for Lopez who normally would be a bigger draw in this sort of movie. The reported budget for the movie was $35 million and it could end up with roughly that amount by the time it leaves theaters.
Remaining in third place was the Tina Fey-Steve Carell comedy Date Night (20th Century Fox), which took in another $10.6 million, having amassed $63.5 million in three weeks.
Sylvain White’s The Losers (Warner Bros.), based on the Vertigo Comics series with a cast including Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Columbus Short and Zoë Saldaña, had a disappointing opening in fourth place with a meager $9.6 million in 2,936 theaters.
The other comic book movie, Matthew Vaughn’s dark comedy Kick-Ass (Lionsgate) took a massive plunge from first to fifth place with roughly $9.5 million, down 52% from its own disappointing opening weekend, with $34.9 million grossed in ten days.
Sixth and seventh place went to Louis Letterier’s remake of Clash of the Titans (Warner Bros.) with $9 million and $145 million total, and Chris Rock’s ensemble comedy Death at a Funeral (Screen Gems/Sony) with $8 million and $28.4 million so far. Overseas, “Clash” again topped the box office with $32 million, pushing its foreign total to $240.4 million and worldwide total to $385.4 million.
Rounding out a month as the No. 1 title on the foreign theatrical circuit, “Clash of the Titans” claimed an estimated $32 million from 10,075 screens in 60 markets on the weekend, raising its overseas boxoffice total to $240.4 million.
After making $2.5 million on Thursday’s Earth Day holiday, the Disneynature film Oceans (Walt Disney) brought in an additional $6 million over the weekend for eighth place.
The Miley Cyrus drama The Last Song (Disney/Touchstone) took ninth place with $3.7 million and $55.4 million total, and then Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland closed off the Top 10 with $2.2 million and $327.5 million domestically since opening in early March. Internationally, “Alice” earned another $26.7 million in second place to bring its overseas total to an impressive $548.5 million and worldwide total to $876 million.
