Jared Hess will direct the NickToons movie, which aims to crossover Doug, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy and Ahhh! Real Monsters!
Get ready for a cartoon crossover of massive proportions! Deadline is today reporting that Paramount Pictures has hired Napoleon Dynamite‘s Jared Hess to write and direct a NickToons movie that will combine the worlds of classic Nickelodeon cartoon originals like “Doug,” “Ren & Stimpy,” “Rugrats” and “Ahh! Real Monsters!” No specifics are mentioned as to how, exactly, the NickToons movie will blend the shows’ various worlds, but plans for the feature are likened to Robert Zemeckis’ 1988 classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Although only “Doug,” “Ren & Stimpy,” “Rugrats,” “Ahh! Real Monsters!” and “The Angry Beavers” are specifically mentioned in the initial report, there are quite a few other 1990s NickToons that could also appear, such as “Rocko’s Modern Life” and “Hey Arnold!” If you’ve got any favorite that you’d like to see on the big screen in the NickToons movie, let us know in the comments below!
Jared Hess, who also wrote and directed Nacho Libre, Gentlemen Broncos and, most recently, Don Verdean, will co-write the NickToons movie with his wife, Jarusha Hess.
The NickToons movie will be produced by Mary Parent and Cale Boyter through their Disruption Entertainment.
Paramount Pictures has worked with Nickelodeon on feature films several times over the past few years on projects like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Adventures of Tintin, Rango and last year’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
How would you like to see a NickToons movie crossover play out? Would you rather the storyline maintain some kind of continuity with the shows themselves, or would you like to see the cartoon characters as “actors” a la Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Share your thoughts below!
