The new Spider-Man movie will debut in 2017
We’ve known for some time now that the upcoming Spider-Man reboot would see the wallcrawler still in high school and wouldn’t re-do the origins of the character. Speaking with Empire magazine (via Yahoo!), director Jon Watts doubled down on that and talked about how Tom Holland embodies the spirit of Spider-Man.
“There are only so many times you can kill Uncle Ben,” he said. “I love the idea of making a coming-of-age high school movie. We’re really going to see Peter Parker in high school and get deeper into that side of it. He’s just 15 now… Tom was pretty perfect. He’s very athletic. He can actually do a backflip! If he didn’t already capture the spirit of the character, with that on top the kid is Spider-Man.”
On the flip side, director Marc Webb, who helmed the previous “Amazing Spider-Man” films starring Andrew Garfield, reacted to the news of Spidey’s transition to the MCU in an interview with /Film (conducted before Watts’ hiring was announced).
“I’m very excited for all the folks at Marvel and what they’re going to do with that character. I think he belongs in that universe and there’s a real excitement to see what they come up with. Maybe we’ll all be on a panel someday, Sam, me and whoever directs it.”
Joining Holland in the cast for the new Spider-Man is Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. Both of the character are expected to appear together first in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. Spider-Man will be written by Vacation writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and is set for a release on July 28, 2017.
