CS Video: Benicio Del Toro on His Enigmatic Role in Sicario

Although actor Benicio Del Toro’s filmography goes all the way back to the ‘80s, it wasn’t until 1995 when Bryan Singer cast him in The Usual Suspects that audiences started paying attention to the Puerto Rico-born actor. Five years later, he was nominated and won his first Oscar for Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, and he’s been one of the go-to Latino actors ever since. 

Recently, Del Toro played infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar in Escobar: Paradise Lost, but in Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, he plays a Colombian character that’s more of a grey area than some of the ones he’s played in the past. Alejandro is the mysterious member of a DEA task force that Emily Blunt’s FBI agent Kate Macer joins in the crime-thriller from the director of Prisoners.

The movie had its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival where it’s received rave reviews (including our own) and a lot of that is due to Del Toro’s performance, which really leaves an impression on the viewer. While up there, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk with Benicio about reuniting with Brolin for the fourth time, as well as working with Villeneuve and acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins.
