When LeBron James and his company SpringHill Entertainment inked a content creation deal with Warner Bros. last month, speculation ran rampant that a Space Jam sequel was in the offing. If King James has any say in the matter — and I assume he does — it seems that speculation might just become reality.
“We’re definitely missing Bugs and Daffy and Tasmanian Devil and every last one of [the Looney Tunes], so hopefully we can do some great things,” James said regarding his thoughts on a sequel, per The Hollywood Reporter. Space Jam is a childhood favorite of mine, and while I admit it is no cinematic masterpiece the nostalgia I have for that movie is undeniable. In other words, a sequel probably won’t do much for the adults in the building but think of all the children, people!
The original adventure, released in 1996, starred Michael Jordan as himself and details an alternate story of the events that occurred between his first retirement in 1993 and his return to the NBA in 1995. Namely, Jordan lines up alongside cast of misfits, “Looney Tunes” characters and Bill Murray — together, the Tune Squad — to restore order to the basketball universe by taking down a roster of gigantic aliens (the Monstars) aided by the stolen talents of professional basketball players.
Given this is all still speculation there is no word yet what story a sequel would entail, but this tweet in response to the LeBron-Warners deal announcement in July is a pretty compelling idea:
SOURCE: Space Jam 2 with LeBron James would feature a plot where he loses with the Tune Squad in the Finals and then signs with the Monstars
