Can a man and a woman just be friends? This is a well explored topic in the romantic comedy genre, of course most directly and most effectively in Rob Reiner’s classic When Harry Met Sally… (have to get that proper punctuation in). And when something is a well explored topic on film, it means we must explore it yet again. Enter the subject of this article, Sleeping With Other People.
This platonic male/female friendship centers on Lainey (Alison Brie) and Jake (Jason Sudeikis). Both are sex addicts, and actually meet at a sex addict meeting, and they try to strike up a friendship. One without benefits. If you think this does not cause problems, you have not seen a movie before.
But well-worn territory is fine if executed is right, which means this comedy basically needs to make me laugh. Based on this new red band trailer, which you can watch below, it did not do very much for me. Jason Mantzoukas is in there, and he is always dependable for a laugh. Alison Brie also made me chuckle once or twice, but I was not terribly over the moon for this trailer. You might be different, however. So, give it a watch and see whether or not you’ll be at the theater when it’s released on September 11.
