Sony is a studio that has been looking for an identity as of late as they’ve been struggling with the likes of Spider-Man, the Adam Sandler brand is faltering and the massive hack last year seemed to send them for something of a tailspin. But they appear to be taking a note from their competitors by announcing a massive slate of upcoming films including franchise sequels, video game adaptations, remakes and Barbie movie? Let’s dig in…
First off, what I thought might be an Oscar contender this year, Jodie Foster‘s Money Monster has been officially dated for a April 8, 2016 release. Hello Berlin Film Festival!
Next is the thriller The Shallows from Rupert Smith, arriving on June 24, followed by Paul Feig‘s Ghostbusters. moving a week earlier to July 15.
The Natalie Dormer and Stanley Tucci zombie feature Patient Zero will arrive on September 2, followed by Antoine Fuqua‘s The Magnificent Seven remake on Sep 23 and Underworld 5 (aka Underworld: Next Generation) brings back Kate Beckinsale one last time for a October 21 release.
Moving into December 2016, we find Morten Tyldum‘s sci-fi film Passengers starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt arriving on December 21, followed a couple days later by the Zach Helm-directed Jumanji remake on Christmas Day.
Moving into 2017, the year begins on January 13 with the long-delayed first installment in the The Dark Tower series followed by Resident Evil 6 (aka Resident Evil: The Final Chapter) on January 27.
Then, on February 17 we get the first of two new Bad Boys movies with Bad Boys 3 followed by Bad Boys 4 two years later on July 3, 2019. No word on whether or not Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are returning or Michael Bay. If I had to guess, I’d say the stars will be back, but Bay will not.
Edgar Wright‘s Baby Driver pulls into a March 17 release date and June brings Barbie on June 2 and the video game adaptation Uncharted on June 30.
Finally, the CG-animated Christian nativity story The Lamb, directed by Tim Reckart (Head Over Heels), will be released on Decembe 8.
Oh, and before I go, Sony Classics has picked up Don Cheadle‘s Miles Ahead for release later this year.
