Warner Bros. has released the first full trailer for Black Mass, which finds Johnny Depp in the shoes of gangster James “Whitey” Bulger and it would appear he’s bringing the kind of performance we’ve been craving from Depp for some time. This isn’t to say Jack Sparrow wasn’t a hit when he first showed up in 2003, but since then the drunken pirate has been evident in nearly every Depp performance. Not so here.
Starring alongside Joel Edgerton as FBI Agent John Connolly, this ’70s set crime drama finds Bulger collaborating with the FBI in an effort to eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. Directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace), the film tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history. , Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons, Juno Temple, Benedict Cumberbatch, Adam Scott and Kevin Bacon co-star.
Black Mass hits theaters on Sept. 18, check out the trailer below.
