I don’t usually wake up in the morning and listen to electronic music, that’s more something my roommate likes to do, but it’s also not every day a new trailer drops for We Are Your Friends, a romantic drama based in the Los Angeles electronic music scene. In other words, I allowed myself to do so for this occasion, and this occasion only.
We Are Your Friends stars Zac Efron as Cole, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ who spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes though when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Wes Bentley), who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.
I only skimmed through a little bit of the trailer, but from what I saw I can say it features Efron looking very like his character in Neighbors, a lot of big block text, a song that builds to 128 beats per minute, and a visual of Ratajkowski dancing while her skin becomes translucent and we see her heartbeat. If any of the above entices you, the trailer is attached below for you to check out.
The film marks the directorial debut of Max Joseph, who directs from a script he co-wrote with Meaghan Oppenheimer. Alongside Efron, Bentley, and Ratajkowski, Jon Bernthal (Fury), Shiloh Fernandez (Evil Dead), Vanessa Lengies (Waiting…), Jonny Weston (Chasing Mavericks) and Alicia Coppola (National Treasure: Book of Secrets) star in the film, which hits theaters August 28.
