There’s a fair amount of bickering back-and-forth over the first Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer and if I may throw my two cents in, I just think it’s a poorly cut trailer, though I am happy to see how far from the Marvel style of filmmaking DC has gone. It, at the very least, looks a little different, and yes, I realize “dark and gritty” has been done to death, but Zack Snyder is more “dark and glossy”, less the grit, so I’ll just roll with it from that perspective.
But nevermind that, to the headline, which comes from an interview Henry Cavill (aka Superman) gave to MTV (via The Playlist) at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and when asked about the upcoming film, the first Superman movie since 2013’s Man of Steel he said, “I wouldn’t call this a Superman sequel. This is Batman versus Superman. It’s a separate entity altogether. It’s introducing the Batman character and expanding upon the universe, which was kicked off by Man of Steel.” Now, to me that sounds like a sequel, but he could also be saying Superman plays a supporting role in what is essentially a new Batman film. My guess is it will likely be an amalgamation of both, especially with Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) involved.
“Everything could change in the editing room, but as it stands, it’s an introduction of the character,” Cavill added, “and ultimately, the introduction of Justice League.” So this is where we also bring in Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Man, is it just me or does it seem like this could be a four hour movie and still have room for more to tell with how many characters are involved?
We have Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gadot as Wonder Woman, rumors of Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Jena Malone has been rumored to be playing Carrie Kelly (aka the female Robin). Oh, and then they threw that hint at The Riddler in the trailer and thing just never end. I am really curious to see how this turns out as it seems Warner Bros. and Snyder have just thrown everything at the wall and are hoping it sticks.
