WB Dates 3 LEGO Movies and Pushes Back Joe Wright’s ‘Pan’ to October

Warner Bros. has been moving things around their release calendar. Most notably, they have three (wait, four) LEGO movies on their slate (talk about wanting to cash in on a product), which have all been rearranged in their dates. First, the untitled LEGO Batman movie is coming in ahead of schedule and will be released on Feb. 10, 2017. The official The LEGO Movie Sequel will be brought up a week to May 18, 2018. And rounding out the trio is LEGO’s Ninjago, which has been delayed from fall 2016 to Sept. 22, 2017. So, if you care about LEGO, mark this down.

On a more current note, and more interesting to me, is the status of Joe Wright‘s latest film Pan. The film was originally slated to come out July 24 this summer but has been pushed back to Oct. 9. On the move, WB distribution executive Dan Fellman said:

We wanted to give ‘Pan’ the space to extend its theatrical run, so taking it out of the cluttered summer season made the most sense.

That makes sense to me. In a summer that already would have had two Marvel movies, a new Mission: Impossible, Mad Max: Fury Road, and a plethora of other things, it would be easy for another Peter Pan retelling to get lost in the noise. I also don’t expect Joe Wright to make an easily consumable blockbuster for most audiences. It is a little more comforting that the film was delayed until October. Had it been pushed to mid-September, it could mean they just want to dump it.

I am still quite excited to see Pan. Save for The Soloist, I have enjoyed all of Wright’s previous films and hope he brings an interesting perspective to the story we all have heard over and over.
