While Paul Feig preps his Ghostbusters film starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones with a July 22, 2016 release date already set, Deadline brings word Sony has yet another new Ghostbusters movie in the works, this one with Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: Civil War) directing, Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Mission: Impossible 5) writing and Channing Tatum producing and, most likely, going to star.
Feig’s film will begin production in June to meet that July release date as Sony is setting up the Ghostcorps production house with Ghostbusters architects Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd on hand to, as Deadline puts it, “scare up branding opportunities based on the 1984 comedy classic.”
As of now Tatum is, technically, only attached to produce, but hope is for him to play one of the new ghost-busting leads. Tatum, however, has been mentioned alongside the Ghostbusters franchise before (as have the Russos), albeit as part of the Sony email hacking incident, revealing Tatum had been brainstorming ideas that involved Tatum and Chris Pratt teaming for ghost-busting duties:
The Russos, Channing and [Tatum’s producing partner Reid Carolin] have been brainstorming ideas and want to create a whole new mythology that would support multiple movies (the way that Christopher Nolan reinvented Batman). To be clear – the Russos want to produce (not direct) and while Channing and Chris are looking for a movie to do together they haven’t mentioned this to him yet because they weren’t sure how we’d react.
Everything in this report essentially meshes with all that came out of those hacked emails, up to and including the fact Hannah Minghella, co-president of production for Columbia Pictures, liked the idea of a Tatum and Pratt-led Ghostbusters so much she suggested making it and Feig’s all-female version side-by-side, creating a Ghostbusters universe. And here it is, though Pratt is not yet attached or even mentioned in Deadline’s article.
Of course, this now makes everything clear as to why nightmare” I can’t imagine anyone jumping at the opportunity to direct a massive two-parter.
