So, Universal has released the above first look picture from their upcoming Jem and the Holograms movie and I wonder, without any other information how many people today even know or care about what this is? I know because my sister loved the cartoon when she was growing up, back in the mid-’80s, but seeing how it ended its run in 1989 and hasn’t had any sort of resurrection, at least not that I know of, who exactly is the audience for this movie?
Perhaps the cast gives us some idea as Aubrey Peeples stars as Jem along with Disney Channel stars Stefanie Scott (“A.N.T. Farm”), Aurora Perrineau (“Pretty Little Liars”), Hayley Kiyoko (“Lemonade Mouth”) making up the rest of Jem’s girl band, that being Kimber, Shana and Aja respectively. Ryan Guzman (The Boy Next Door, Step Up: All In) will play the Holograms’ road manager Rio and both Juliette Lewis and Molly Ringwald will play unspecified roles.
Here’s the recently release official synopsis:
As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’Jem and the Holograms, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.
The pic is directed by Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) and hits theaters on October 23. Perhaps we’ll have a trailer soon enough and maybe then have a better idea of why anyone thought this was a good idea.
