The Directors Guild of America (DGA) handed out their annual awards this evening and while the news of Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman) winning the night’s top award is what we’ll all probably focus on, it’s interesting to note it was women dominated the night with four major wins for Laura Poitras (Citizenfour), Lisa Cholodenko (“Olive Kitteredge”), Jill Soloway (“Transparent”) and Lesli Linka Glater (“Homeland”) winning in the Documentary, TV movie-miniseries, TV Comedy and TV Drama categories respectively. Somewhat ironic considering Ava DuVernay (Selma) wasn’t nominated in the feature film category… is this yet another sign as to why TV seems to be gaining so much more respect and attention over films nowadays?
[amz asin=”B00RO49JEI” size=”small”]As for that feature film win for Inarritu, it’s yet another sign that it just might be Birdman winning big at the Oscars this year. After all, the DGA winner has gone on to win the Oscar all but seven times since they began handing out awards in 1948 and one of those is Ben Affleck‘s win a couple years ago when he wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar. The Academy made up for that by giving Argo the top prize.
Of course, the other possible winner tonight was Richard Linklater (Boyhood), but man that movie seems to be coming under fire lately, especially with articles such as this thinly veiled backhand published in the “New York Times” on Friday. Cheap shots, it’s the way of the awards race.
Other feature film nominees tonight included Clint Eastwood (American Sniper), Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game).
As far as my Oscar predictions go, yes, they have changed. You can browse all of my Oscar predictions right here and I have already updated the Oscar Overture with Inarritu’s win tonight. You can check out my precursor chart right here.
