Box Office: ‘Big Hero 6’ Kicks Off with $1.4M on Thursday, ‘Interstellar’ Adds $3.5M

Disney hasn’t officially given out a budget number for their new animated release Big Hero 6, but reports have both it and Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar budgeted at $165 million. It’s not often two behemoth’s open on the same weekend, but these two films may be separated demographically by a wide enough margin to each have a very successful opening weekend.

So far Big Hero 6 brought in $1.4 million from Thursday night screenings, which pretty much matches Interstellar‘s $1.35 million limited IMAX opening on Monday from 249 theaters. Interstellar, however, nearly tripled that figure on Thursday, bringing in an estimated $3.5 million.

The reader average is predicting $61 million compared to Laremy’s more conservative $52.5 million prediction. Personally I think Laremy’s sounds more reasonable at this point given the sheer length of Interstellar. With a 169-minute running time and trailers you’re talking about more than three hours in the theater, that limits the number of showings even possible, but I wouldn’t put it past a Christopher Nolan film to beat the odds, though it should be interesting to see if it will be Interstellar on top or will the families support Big Hero 6 en masse? Oh, and don’t forget, Big Hero 6 gets that 3D bump. Could be a factor.

I’ve included Laremy’s predictions and the average reader predictions directly below and I’ll be back on Sunday with box office estimates. To see Laremy’s full list of predictions and all reader predictions for this weekend click here.
