“Hey! If we’re going to have a female superhero movie it should be directed by a female!” Hilarious. And I’m not saying that because I don’t think a female should be hired to direct Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ planned Wonder Woman movie, but because it’s not as if they are breaking any gender lines in doing so. Why isn’t a female director also being sought to direct The Flash, Aquaman or Shazam? Oh… I see…
Either way, it is what it is and I guess women will just have to be satisfied for the bone they’re thrown for the time being as The Hollywood Reporter brings word WB is searching for a female director to direct the Gal Gadot-led Wonder Woman feature targeting a June 23, 2017 release following Gadot’s appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.
While sites have already started putting together their wishlists, Forbes has a list of five names allegedly already in the studio’s sites. These names include Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), Karyn Kusama (Æon Flux), Mimi Leder (Deep Impact, “The Leftovers”) and Julie Taymor (Across The Universe). Gotta say, before all is said and done you know Michelle MacLaren‘s name will bubble to the surface considering her work on “Breaking Bad“, “Game of Thrones” and “The Walking Dead“. In fact, I’m shocked she’s not on this list. Then there’s Patty Jenkins who was attached to direct Thor: The Dark World at one point before being ushed to the sidelines and even Lexi Alexander whose already dipped her toes in the superhero realm with Punisher: War Zone.
As annoying as it is that it takes a female superhero movie to get a female in the director’s chair for one of these superhero blockbusters, a successful outing in this instance could be a big step forward. So for that we should be excited. I hope it happens, it appears it will and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see one of the above names take the project on, though I think we can scratch Bigelow off that list right now, she’s got her hands full with Triple Frontier and the already-announced The True American.
