Well, I guess we will have a movie crossing $20 million this weekend, but it won’t be the sequel Dolphin Tale 2, but instead the Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson thriller No Good Deed, which took #1 on Friday with a whopping $8.8 million. Made for only $13.2 million, this one is looking to nearly double its production budget in its first three days.
I haven’t yet seen a CinemaScore for the film, but the fact Screen Gems cancelled press screenings at the eleventh hour didn’t bode well for the film’s possible quality so it will be interesting to see if audiences end up enjoying it even though the critics that have rushed out to see it on their own dime seem to be unimpressed.
Dolphin Tale 2 took half the amount of No Good Deed on Friday, bringing in an estimated $4.3 million, but perhaps the more interesting result is the $1.5 million The Drop brought in while in limited release as it looks like it will easily crack the top ten from only 500 theaters.
I will have the complete box office update for you on Sunday. [Variety]
