The Weinstein Co. looks ready to unwrap Tim Burton‘s Big Eyes, the upcoming Christmas Day release that is projected to be a major player at this year’s Oscars. Directed and produced by Burton, the film is based on the true story of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), who was one of the most successful painters 1950s and early 1960s.
Keane earned staggering notoriety by revolutionizing the commercialization and accessibility of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The truth would eventually be discovered though: Keane’s paintings were actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret (Amy Adams). The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a lie that had grown to gigantic proportions.
The film centers on Margaret’s awakening as an artist and Adams is expected to earn her sixth Oscar nomination and right now I have her on the #1 line in my early Best Actress predictions. Waltz will likely find his way into the conversation as should Burton and the film itself in a variety of categories… that is… if it’s any good.
Today the first two pictures from the film have been released, the second directly below. [via USA Today]
