Max Landis Denies Reports He’s Writing ‘Ghostbusters 3’, but Does Share an Opening Pitch

For a brief moment, there was a rumor floating around that Max Landis, screenwriter of Chronicle and son of famed director John Landis, was doing a polish to the current draft of the Ghostbusters 3 screenplay. That report came from Nikki Finke who has since deleted the original post. Landis took to Twitter and denied the report, but did post something interesting, an idea he had for how the third film could begin. I’ve compiled the series of tweets (thanks to SlashFilm) below:

My Ghostbusters 3 began in the 1920s with Ivo Shandor murdering a gluttonous associate to protect his cult after he has a moral objection. Shandor tells the overweight man nothing can stop the coming of Gozer [pictured above]; first, the gate will open in 1984, then again twenty years later, the fat man, who now has all the details of Shandor’s plans, threatens to go to the police, and Shandor poisons him. It’s scary, but… as Shandor escapes, we see that we’re in the Sedgewick Hotel, and that the guy we just saw die… is Slimer.

Cue theme. Show title.

Personally I think that’s a great idea. It pays some homage to the past while setting the film far enough in the future that it makes sense why the old Ghostbusters might not all still be around, if any of them remain.

The screenplay began with Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky working alongside Ramis, Reitman and Dan Aykroyd. Etan Cohen did a polish shortly after that and the film is currently looking for a director to begin filming late 2014 or early 2015.
