This weekend I was talking movies with the family and in suggesting X-Men: Days of Future Past my mother-in-law asked, “Is that the one with the Avengers?” I told her she was thinking of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and she said, “Yes, I want to see that. I like the Avengers!”
It got me wondering how well Guardians of the Galaxy will do without that direct tie to The Avengers and that specific aspect of this Marvel Cinematic Universe. Is there a chance anything not having to do with The Avengers could tumble at the box office? Did Marvel make a mistake not introducing the Guardians — Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket the Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot the sentient tree (Vin Diesel) — in an Avengers film first?
Personally I’m quite excited for Guardians, primarily because it’s not an Avengers film and I’m interested in seeing what James Gunn has in store and if he’ll be able to put his own stamp on the movie within a system not too interested in what a director wants.
Oh, and here’s a new poster and trailer for the film featuring the talking raccoon and tree, aka the number one and two reasons I want to see this movie.
