I can’t imagine there are too many people that seriously want to see a Ghostbusters III. Even when 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller came aboard it was hard to believe they’d take the job if they couldn’t get, as I noted in my earlier post, “a little hands on with the current draft of the screenplay.” Well, maybe that was a tipping point.
According to a tweet from TheWrap.com columnist Jeff Sneider, Lord and Miller have walked away from the project, apparently wanting to “keep their options open.”

With the success of The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street on the horizon it makes total sense to me that they’d walk, especially given they didn’t originate the story, which it sound like Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd have a strong personal attachment to and which was last polished by Ethan Coen… as far as I know.
So what now? Well, as much as it seems like this movie is going to happen I wish they would just let it fade away into non-existence. Lord and Miller walking is a sign that it wasn’t quite their cup of tea, which is telling and the next director that signs on to take it over will even tell a larger portion of the story.
As for what that story is, Reitman recently said, “It’s a version of Ghostbusters that has the originals in a very minor role… I’m not going to say how many Ghostbusters there will be in the new cast, but we are determined to retain the spirit of the original film, and I am pleased that all of this seems to have happened organically.”
That said, is there a director you can think of you’d like to see step up to the plate or would give you any kind of confidence this might be any good? Lord and Miller were certainly an interesting option, but now…?
