James Rebhorn was a character actor that will most likely be remembered for either his recent role on television as Frank Mathison in “Homeland” or his many, many film characters from Secretary of Defense Albert Nimziki in Independence Day — “Excuse me Mr. President, that’s not entirely accurate.” — or Dr. Larry “It’s only a game Focker!” Banks in Meet the Parents. Either way, James Rebhorn was an actor you didn’t forget and today we learn of his passing at the age of 65.
The news was first confirmed on Twitter by Rhett Bartlett who says Rebhorn’s agent confirmed the news, “He died Friday afternoon, at home. He was a wonderful man and he will be greatly missed.”
Rebhorn died from melanoma, which he was first diagnosed with back in 1992, and as far as I’m concerned, 65 is too young. Along with the roles mentioned above I think we’ll also all remember him as headmaster Mr. Trask in Scent of a Woman, Jim Feingold in David Fincher’s The Game and the District Attorney Hoyt in the “Seinfeld” series finale.
