Only in the past couple days did we learn Sony was getting serious about making Ghostbusters III and at the same time we learned Ivan Reitman wouldn’t direct the film following the death of Harold Ramis. Reitman, however, is staying on as a producer and they are now looking for a director to take over and begin filming either late 2014 or early 2015.
According to Nikki Finke they may have found their man, or men, as it were, in this case. Current buzz is 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller are in talks to direct the film.
The idea of Lord and Miller taking over is an interesting one. Outside of the upcoming 22 Jump Street this duo has seen sequels to both Cloud with a Chance of Meatballs and now The Lego Movie greenlit, but they haven’t stuck around to direct. Now they’re looking at a sequel to a franchise they didn’t originate, but considering it sounds like this is going to be more of a franchise refresh rather than a by-the-book sequel, it makes a little more sense why they might be interested.
However, I would also expect them to get a little hands on with the current draft of the screenplay, last polished by Etan Cohen, but that also makes sense, and they have more than enough time to get it done… provided they take the job.
